Spring is in the air, and just like the Earth awakens this time of year, so too is Emerald Ark blossoming with purpose, connection, and love. As we honor Earth Day and Volunteer Month, we invite you to be a part of the heart and hands behind our mission—rescuing, healing, and nurturing animals with holistic care and dignity.
Earth Day | April 22nd
At Emerald Ark, every day is Earth Day. Our mission is deeply rooted in living in harmony with all beings and honoring the planet we call home. From the food we provide to our feathered and furr babies in our care to the sustainable choices we make, we strive to respect the Earth in everything we do. This Earth Day, consider how you can make small, animal-friendly, eco-conscious changes—your choices matter!
Meet Oreo — A Special Soul in Need Being Given Sanctuary at Emerald Ark
Oreo, special needs Schipperke mix.
We invite you to help us help Oreo.
And please know—you are included in the “Us” of Emerald Ark.
Oreo is a 8–10 year-old Schipperke mix with special needs, and her story will absolutely tug at your heart. Her back legs no longer work, and her devoted mom, now facing health challenges and long workdays, can no longer provide the level of care Oreo needs.
Emerald Ark has stepped in, and we’re committed to helping Oreo improve her quality of life through therapeutic nutrition and holistic medical care. Our local vet expresses hope for Oreo regaining use of her rear legs, this achievement will help many dogs and people who now suffer with degenerated disc disease. With your support, we can give Oreo a second chance at mobility and comfort.
Oreo was in the San Jose, CA area.
Her mom drove her to us on Easter Sunday. It was a heartfelt afternoon as Oreo's Mom sat and talked with Leslie about her very difficult decision to bring Oreo to us.
We also have a wheels donation for Oreo in the works and on its way to us.
She will also need a holistic medical assessment and care plan. Presently due to Oreo's fragile and debilitated condition we expect this initial exam, x-rays and blood work to run between $1,000 to $1.500.
Emerald Ark has a donation page set up with the popular online store Chewy. Please click on the DONATE button below to view our donation page and see the full list of items Oreo needs for her care and comfort. You can purchase any items for Oreo and Chewy will deliver the items straight to us, or click here to make a cash donation to help cover Oreo's medical expenses.
Emerald Ark couldn’t thrive without the compassion and time of our incredible volunteers. This month, we shine a special spotlight on a few amazing hearts in our community:
Reno Local Volunteer Spotlight: Megan Barnhard
Megan & her two fur babies, two black cats
Megan brings her writing talents, tech savvy, and huge heart to Emerald Ark. She also supports our community outreach at the Riverside Farmers Market in Reno on specific Sundays in Reno.
"I volunteer with Emerald Ark because I value the education they offer to pet parents around holistic health and nutrition, and because I want to support access to safe, happy homes for more animals in the Reno-Tahoe area." — Megan
Virtual Tech Wizard: Akanksha B.
Akanksha
Since the very beginning of Emerald Ark, Akanksha has been a vital part of our team. With a Master's in Computer Science, she has played a key role in the development of the Best Bird Food Ever website and the creation of our NEW Emerald Ark website.
Akanksha is originally from Nigeria and is currently in the U.S. on a student visa. Despite her demanding studies, she continues to support us with her incredible tech skills and unwavering dedication. We are so grateful for her consistency, kindness, and big heart.
"Thank you for sharing Oreo's story—it really touched me. I'm grateful to be part of Emerald Ark and appreciate all the heartfelt work you do." — Akanksha B.
Additional Volunteers, Near & Far:
