National Pet Hydration Awareness Month 💧
July is National Pet Hydration Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to focus on one of the most fundamental aspects of pet health—proper hydration! Just like humans, our furry friends need adequate water intake to maintain optimal health, especially during the hot summer months.
Why Hydration Matters: Proper hydration is essential for your pet's overall health and well-being. Water helps regulate body temperature, aids digestion, supports kidney function, and keeps joints lubricated. During summer heat, pets are at increased risk of dehydration, which can lead to serious health complications if not addressed promptly.
Signs of Dehydration to Watch For:
- Excessive panting or drooling
- Loss of skin elasticity (skin doesn't snap back when gently pinched)
- Dry or sticky gums
- Lethargy or weakness
- Loss of appetite
- Sunken eyes
- Reduced urination
Hydration Tips for Happy, Healthy Pets:
Fresh Water Access: Ensure your pet always has access to clean, fresh water. Change the water daily and clean bowls regularly to prevent bacterial growth.
Multiple Water Stations: Place water bowls in several locations around your home, especially if you have multiple pets or a large house.
Travel Hydration: Always bring water and a portable bowl when traveling with your pet, whether it's a short car ride or a longer adventure.
Temperature Matters: Some pets prefer slightly cool water, especially during hot weather. Avoid ice-cold water, which can cause stomach upset.
Encourage Drinking: If your pet is a reluctant drinker, try adding a small amount of low-sodium broth to their water or consider a pet water fountain, which many animals find more appealing than still water.
Monitor Intake: Pay attention to your pet's normal drinking habits so you can quickly identify any changes that might indicate a health issue.
Outdoor Safety: During walks or outdoor playtime, take frequent water breaks and avoid exercising during the hottest parts of the day.
Special Considerations: Senior pets, puppies, and animals with certain health conditions may need extra attention to their hydration needs. If you have concerns about your pet's water intake or notice signs of dehydration, don't hesitate to contact our team for guidance.
Trace ConcenTrace® Daily Mineral Powder
Trace's ConcenTrace®
Trace, one of our corporate sponsors, has unveiled a new product, ConcenTrace® Daily Mineral Powder. This new product provides a full spectrum of trace minerals that the normal person may be missing in their diet. These minerals provide support for very essential functions and parts of our body such as “efficient hydration” and replacing electrolytes. Additionally, it promotes healthy bones, joints, and muscles. Like we take care of our animals, we need to take care of ourselves too!
"Many don't realize that mineral deficiency is a widespread issue. Brain fog, poor sleep and improper digestion are common symptoms, often going untreated," said Chuck Walkley, CEO of Trace. While some may think various prescriptions may be the answer, ConcenTrace® could be your answer for these various issues. Some of the ingredients and the functions they provide are:
- Magnesium: Supports over 300 biochemical reactions in the body and promotes bone, muscle, cardiovascular, and immune health.
- Chloride: Helps to maintain proper fluid balance and aids in digestion.
- Sodium: Helps maintain fluid balance.
- Potassium: Promotes proper muscle and nerve function and supports optimal heart health.
Just using one to two scoops could improve your health immensely. ConcenTrace® Daily Mineral Powder is sustainably sourced, made in the U.S. and third-party tested, now available for purchase online, on Amazon and at select retailers nationwide. Trace has been around for over fifty years trying to help people remineralize their bodies.

🌍 Plastic-Free July: A Commitment to Our Planet and Pets
July is Plastic-Free July, a global movement that challenges us to refuse single-use plastics and find sustainable alternatives. At Emerald Ark, we believe that caring for our pets also means caring for the environment they live in. Plastic pollution poses serious threats to wildlife, marine ecosystems, and ultimately affects the health of all living creatures, including our beloved companions.
Why Plastic-Free Matters for Pet Health: Microplastics have been found in pet food, water sources, and even in the air our pets breathe. By reducing our plastic consumption, we're not only protecting the planet but also safeguarding our pets' long-term health. Simple changes like choosing biodegradable waste bags, glass or stainless steel food bowls, and eco-friendly toys can make a meaningful difference.
Small Changes, Big Impact: This month, we encourage our Emerald Ark family to join the Plastic-Free July movement. Every plastic item we refuse is a step toward a cleaner, healthier world for future generations of pets and their families. Together, we can create positive change that extends far beyond our clinic walls.
Why do People Volunteer
Volunteering is defined as freely offering to do something. It is an undertaking usually to help an organization accomplish a particular goal. There are several reasons why one should volunteer such as it helps those in need or provides one with a good feeling of doing something for others out of the kindness of their heart. However, this article is about why others may not want or choose to volunteer.
The primary barrier to volunteering is people don’t want to make an ongoing commitment. The good thing with Emerald Ark is we have plenty of ways you can volunteer without making a continuous long term commitment. We simply ask that you are able to come once a month for three or more months to clean parrot enclosures and cleaning salmon trim. The main thing is to be considerate of Leslie’s time, as she does have to train everyone who comes in so if you can make it a repeat appearance, it would be greatly appreciated. While this does need to be done often, just coming in once a month does help us out more than you could know. On the other hand, if you are willing to make a commitment to helping us out long term, it would go a long way with us, not to mention how great you would feel helping out animals in need.
The secondary reason why some may not want to volunteer is they prefer to do something else with their spare time. We understand everyone has busy lives and if you are really not able to spare any time to volunteer then we completely understand. We always appreciate DONATIONS, anything you can give goes a long way! However, if you do have any time you can spare, we greatly appreciate it. Simply reach out to Leslie and we can find something for you to do, no matter how small or simple of a task, it matters to us!
The tertiary reason why some choose not to volunteer is they have work or study commitments and that’s ok, we get it. If there is any way you could spare any of your time, we would love to have you! Whether it is on weekends or right after work for simply an hour, we can accommodate your schedule. We also understand if you can’t make it out to our location, we have plenty of administrative tasks that you can do, just reach out to Leslie and we can find something for you to help us with. It really means a lot to us and the animals that may benefit from your help.
The last reason that keeps people from volunteering that I wanted to go over is that they haven’t been asked. Well guess what, we’re asking you now and please bring your friends! Come help us and we promise the work is fulfilling, rewarding, and satisfying with how you feel afterwards. There is no work that goes without thankfulness and gratitude that we have for you all that can help and if you’re really not able to, that’s okay! A DONATION of any size is always appreciated.
The great thing about volunteering with Emerald Ark is it is helping the animals local to the Northern Nevada area. If this is where you live, then you are assisting and bettering the lives of the dogs and cats and even parrots local to the area and across the nation with Leslie’s services. Volunteering is also an act of unconditional love. Giving without the expectation of receiving physical compensation. Gaining from giving. And if you’re a spiritual person, you get what you give. Please consider volunteering with us, there are no words that can express how much we would appreciate it.
